What Does Kandasana Mean?

Kandasana is a seated yoga asana that challenges the flexibility of the legs. The term is derived from the Sanskrit kanda, meaning "bulbous," and asana, meaning "pose." It is named as such because the feet resemble the bulb of an onion in this posture.

To perform this pose, the practitioner sits on the floor and bends the legs at the knees to bring the feet toward the perineum. The feet are held while the ankles twist so that the soles of the feet face the body. The feet are then placed against the navel.

Kandasana is also called upward ankle twist pose in English.

One of the most important benefits of kandasana is its power to address sexual disorders. It increases sperm count and cures impotency. Practicing kandasana also stimulates the organs, including the kidneys and bladder, as well as promotes mental calmness.

In spiritual practice, kandasana activates the muladhara (root) chakra. Muladhara is associated with health, passion, survival and progress. Energizing this chakra helps the practitioner stay connected with themselves and the world. It also maintains the function of the lower part of the body.
