What Does Low Lunge Pose Mean?

Low lunge pose is a basic yoga posture that provides a deep stretch for the groin, quadriceps and hips.

From downward-facing dog pose, step one foot forward between the hands with the knee at a 90-degree angle just above the ankle. Lower the back knee to the ground while adjusting the foot so the toes face back and the top of the foot touches the ground. The hands remain on the mat on either side of the front foot.

In Sanskrit, low lunge pose is known as Anjaneyasana, so named for Anjani, the mother of the Hindu god, Hanuman. In a deeper expression of the pose with the back arched and arms extending overhead, it is also known as crescent moon pose.

Low lunge pose requires and improves basic balance, but to further challenge balance in this posture, the eyes may be closed. The pose also improves concentration, calms the mind and has these physical benefits:

  • Strengthens the gluteus and quadricep muscles
  • Eases sciatica pain
  • Opens the chest and shoulders
  • Expands the lungs
  • Stimulates the reproductive and digestive organs

Yogis with high blood pressure, heart problems or knee injuries should consult their doctor before practicing low lunge pose. Those with shoulder problems should keep the hands on the ground or rest them on their thigh, while those with neck or back problems should not deepen the pose with a backbend (as in crescent moon pose). To ease pressure, a pillow may be placed under the back knee.
