What Does Shandilya Mean?

Shandilya is the name of a couple of ancient Hindu rishis, but most commonly refers to the founder of the Shandilya clan, or gotra, who lived around the first century CE. This rishi – a term that can mean a seer, a sage or a poet of hymns – is also credited with authoring the Shandilya Upanishad. The upanishads are ancient Hindu texts that are part of the Vedas.

The name Shandilya means “one of the full moon,” from the Sanskrit san, meaning “full” and dilam, meaning “moon.”

Yogapedia Explains Shandilya

Shandilya was the grandson of a rishi and the son of the sage Asita. Some sources say that another rishi named Shandilya was the son of the sage Vasistha, who was one of the seven great rishis, known as the saptarishis.

The Shandilya Upanishad, while a minor text, is one of 20 yoga upanishads and may have been one of the sources that Patanjali used to formulate the eight-limbed path of yoga. This upanishad describes yoga practices such as asanas (poses), pranayamas (breathing techniques), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation), and pratyahara (control of senses), as well as 10 yamas (ethical restraints) and 10 niyamas (ethical observances or duties).
