Last updated: December 21, 2023

What Does Bhudi Mudra Mean?

Bhudi Mudra is a sacred hand gesture or 'seal,' used to restore or maintain fluid balance in the body. Mudras are used in yoga in order to direct the flow of energy in the subtle body. Also known as 'fluid mudra,' Bhudi Mudra is useful for those suffering an imbalance in the water element. It is used to treat dry eyes, pyelitis, dry mouth, and disorders of the kidney or bladder.

Follow these steps to practice Bhudi Mudra, up to three times a day:

  1. Come into a stable sitting posture and bring both hands to the knees, palms facing up.
  2. Bring the tip of the thumb and the little finger together.
  3. Extend the other three fingers in a relaxed way.
  4. Hold the mudra for five to fifteen minutes, whilst engaging in deep, diaphragmatic breathing.

Yogapedia Explains Bhudi Mudra

The little finger is associated with the sacrum and is thought to contain the element of water. The pressure of the thumb on the little finger, therefore, helps to restore the equilibrium of water in the body. Since the body is made up of 60% water, it is especially important to maintain this balance.

In addition to the physical benefits of Bhudi Mudra, it can help to improve concentration and provide mental clarity. It is beneficial to practice this gesture during meditation, as it calms and clears the mind of negative thoughts. Bhudi Mudra can also improve the sense of taste, feeling and intuition.
