What Does Kasyapasana Mean?

Kasyapasana is an advanced variation on vasisthasana, or side plank, which requires strength, control and mobility in the hips to perform. Its name comes from the name of the sage, Kasyapa, to whom the pose is dedicated to, and the Sanskrit word, asana, which means “seat” or “pose.”

The physical benefits of this challenging posture helps to build confidence and a sense of accomplishment because, for many, achieving it means overcoming barriers and their own expectations.

Kasyapasana is known in English as pose dedicated to sage Kasyapa."

Yogapedia Explains Kasyapasana

Kasyapa, the person to whom this pose is dedicated, was a revered Vedic sage referenced in the "Rigveda" as well as numerous other Sanskrit texts and mythologies, which are important in both Hindu and yogic philosophy. He's known as a self-made scholar and was based in the northwestern Indian subcontinent.

On a holistic level, the posture is believed to have a calming effect on the solar plexus. To enhance its mental benefits, it should be performed toward the end of a yoga asana practice, followed by closing postures and a few minutes of meditation before savasana.
