What Does
Awakened Pose Mean?
Awakened pose is an advanced seated posture that requires flexibility, particularly in the inner thighs, hips, shoulders and arms.
To practice the pose, one leg is extended, while the other is placed behind the head. The opposite arm wraps over and around the foot. The hands clasp at the side with the gaze (drishti) upward.
Awakened pose is also known by its Sanskrit name, buddhasana. In Iyengar yoga, awakened pose is the upright phase of Kapila’s pose, or kapilasana, which includes a forward fold.
Yogapedia Explains Awakened Pose
Awakened pose is part of the fourth series of Ashtanga yoga and is followed in the vinyasa by moon bird pose (chakorasana) then Kapila’s pose.
Awakened pose is believed to open and balance the following major chakras, or energy centers in the body:
- Sacral chakra (svadisthana) – This is the center of creativity and is associated with emotional stability, pleasure and healthy relationships.
- Heart chakra (anahata) – This energy center is associated with love, acceptance, forgiveness, compassion and empathy.
- Throat chakra (visuddhi) – This is the speech center and the first of the spiritual chakras. It is associated with faith, understanding, higher truth and higher communication.
