Sukshma-Parvan

Last updated: December 21, 2023

What Does Sukshma-Parvan Mean?

Sukshma-parvan is the name given in yogic philosophy to the subtle realm of nature or prakriti.

Sukshma is a Sanskrit term that can be translated as "subtle" or "dormant." It is often associated with things that do not have a gross, physical existence, but can be sensed or felt on a more subtle level. The etymology of parvan is quite complex, but in this context, it can be interpreted as meaning a “portion, part or division,” referring to the portion of prakriti it is describing.

Yogapedia Explains Sukshma-Parvan

In yogic philosophy, sukshma-parvan is usually defined in contrast with its counterpart more coarse, physical realm of prakriti, sthula-parvan. Sthula-parvan denotes the realm in which all physical objects are clearly recognisable from their gross existence.

In addition to this, prakriti is also believed to include an eternal dimension, which is known as pradhana. All the elements of prakriti, including sukshma-parvan are regarded as unconscious and insentient.

All things that exist physically are also said to have a presence on sukshma-parvan, thus the physical realm and the subtle realm are intrinsically connected.
