Udvartana

Last updated: December 21, 2023

What Does Udvartana Mean?

Udvartana is an Ayurvedic practice of massaging the skin with dry powders, as a means of restoring balance to the body and maintaining physical health. Since it is particularly effective at removing excess oil from the skin, Udvartana is recommended following Ayurvedic treatments that use oil, such as abhyanga or snehana.

Udvartana helps to reduce Kapha dosha, increase circulation and improve overall skin health and complexion. It is also used to encourage strength, stability and cohesiveness of tissues throughout the entire body. Udvartana massage is an effective treatment for cellulite, a condition which is often an indication of Kapha imbalance.

Yogapedia Explains Udvartana

Udvartana treatments use powdered compounds of minerals, herbs and medicinal spices. The specific ingredients of the compound used are determined by the unique Prakriti (constitution) and Vikriti (imbalance) present in the patient at the time of treatment.

Udvartana massage can be used for:

  • Liquefying and eliminating fat in the body
  • Lymphatic drainage
  • Improving circulation
  • Eliminating toxins
  • Reducing body aches and pain
  • Relieving fatigue
  • Activating metabolism
  • Aiding weight loss

The exfoliating effects of this massage also make it a great remedy for skin eruptions, cleansing pores and removing impurities. It is a relaxing treatment, in turn stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system and inducing a sense of calm.
