What Does Ananda Hum Mean?

Ananda hum is an ancient Sanskrit mantra that can be repeated silently as a focus of meditation or chanted aloud. Its translation is “I am bliss,” or “Happiness is my true nature.”

The ananda hum mantra is used as a mantra to help the yogi reconnect with their own blissful and joyful nature. It removes the distractions of a distinct and separate sense of self and helps them to awaken to the transcendent happiness of their existence.

Yogapedia Explains Ananda Hum

Like all mantras, the sounds of the ananda hum mantra can soothe and calm the yogi’s mind and body to allow the significance of the words to resonate. The individual words of the mantra mean:

  • Ananda – bliss or happiness. In the ancient yogic scriptures the Vedas, Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, ananda signifies the bliss that comes with enlightenment and liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
  • Hum – either “I” or “I am”

The words ananda hum together therefore help to bring the yogi back into alignment with what they really are. It can be thought of as a reassuring mantra, as it reminds the yogi that their purest essence is already a state of bliss. All they need to do is remember their true nature.
