What Does Abhi Mean?

Abhi is a word that appears frequently in Hindu scriptures, but it’s exact meaning is unclear. The word is found in the Sanskrit, Hindi, Pali and Bengali languages. It is generally believed to mean “toward,” “in the direction of,” “into,” “new,” “about” or “higher.” The Hindi translation means “just now” or “now itself,” but the meaning of the Sanskrit word is unclear unless it is by itself, then it means “ray of sunlight.”

Yogapedia Explains Abhi

The first reference to abhi is in the “Rig Veda,” an ancient Hindu sacred text. After that, the word appears frequently in such ancient Sanskrit texts as the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and the other Vedas.

The word, abhih (with a silent “h” at the end), as mentioned in the Vedanta appears to be the same word and is translated as “fearless.”

Abhi is also used as a prefix in many Indian names, both male and female, but on its own is a common male name.
