Hip Hop Yoga

Last updated: December 21, 2023

What Does Hip Hop Yoga Mean?

Hip Hop yoga is a physical yoga practice paired with hip-hop music. In previous years, two versions of the class had been trademarked but abandoned, Hip Hop Yoga and Hip-Hop Yoga. Unlike traditional styles of yoga asana practice, the hip-hop versions tend to be faster paced and more aerobic in nature, and they may be integrated with Hot yoga (Bikram yoga).

Deepak Chopra, prominent in the field of integrative medicine, is associated with a different type of Hip Hop yoga, a program that targets inner-city youth. The program uses music that is culturally relevant to attract the youth to yoga practice. It includes original music and lyrics written by the youth.

Yogapedia Explains Hip Hop Yoga

Opponents of the non-traditional music-themed yoga classes like Hip Hop yoga, decry the commercialism that ignores the spiritualism essential to complete yoga practice. Proponents counter that Hip Hop yoga is innovative, fun and pure joy, as well as good exercise.

Chopra, whose Chopra Yoga Center offers a class called HipHop Yoga, said in an interview with Huffington Post that when music is associated with a positive experience like yoga, it has a healing effect. In the inner-city youth program in particular, Hip Hop yoga is based on the Ashtanga yoga format. Kids are taught the movements and breathing patterns, which are then set to hip-hop music. The class ends with silent meditation and relaxation, following by a discussion of Chopra's Seven Spiritual Laws of Success.
