Kreem

Last updated: December 21, 2023

What Does Kreem Mean?

Kreem is a bija (“seed”) mantra associated with Kali, the Hindu goddess of empowerment, death (destruction of evil) and time. It is also called the yoga bija, or the seed sound of yoga practice. Bija mantras typically have no literal meaning but provide a connection to specific energies or spiritual principles, thereby accelerating physical, spiritual and emotional growth and transformation.

In yoga practice, bija mantras are chanted while performing poses or during meditation to focus concentration on one purpose and/or still the mind.

Yogapedia Explains Kreem

As the yoga bija, kreem is the sound of work and transformational energy. Kreem awakens kundalini shakti, thereby helping yogis merge their outer nature with their higher Self. Through kreem, it is said that yogis can ignite the power of Kali within themselves. It promotes higher perception and pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses) as the yogi travels the eight-limbed path of yoga to samadhi and union with the higher Self. On a physical level, chanting kreem is thought to increase the brain’s synovia, which prevents shock and phobia.

Bija mantras can be chanted alone or as an element in a longer mantra. Although some mantras may be translatable, their meanings are less important than the sound vibrations, which provide the true benefits of the mantras.
