What Does Perfect Pose Mean?

Perfect pose is a basic seated yoga posture that is often used during meditation and the practice of pranayama breathing exercises. It is also known as accomplished pose and adept pose, and by its Sanskrit name, siddhasana.

In perfect pose, one leg is folded so that the foot rests on the ground against the inner thigh near the perineum, and the other foot is placed next to or atop the ankle of the first foot. The hands rest on the knees or in the lap or may take a mudra, such as anjali (prayer position).

In some yoga traditions it is believed that perfect pose can help the yogi let go of the ego-based lower self, paving the way to union with the higher Self. Perfect pose is also believed to have these benefits:

  • Stretches the knees, hips and ankles
  • Stabilizes the core muscles of the abdomen and back
  • Lengthens the spine
  • Balances hormones and the reproductive organs
  • Helps stabilize sexual energy
  • Promotes inner calm and groundedness

Yogis with sciatica or a knee injury should skip perfect pose. Those with limited flexibility may practice the pose with a blanket or bolster under the hips or knees and/or sit with the back to a wall.
