What Does Amma Mata Amritanandamayi Mean?

Amma Mata Amritanandamayi, known simply as Amma (mother), is one of India's foremost spiritual leaders. Many of her followers revere her as a saint. She is known as the “hugging saint” because she doesn't just embrace people spiritually, but physically. She is said to have hugged more then 36 million people throughout the world.

Hugging is Amma's darshan. Her motherly approach offers love and comfort to anyone in need, as well as provides spiritual guidance.

  • Mata Amritanandamayi Math – an international organization that focuses on uplifting mankind spiritually and materially on the principles of Karma yoga, including providing disaster relief, as well as healthcare, environmental programs and educational programs.
  • Amrita Institute of Medical Science (Amrita Hospital) – a medical facility in Kerala, India that provides compassionate and advanced healthcare to the poor at no cost. It has also become a teaching and research hospital, offering advanced medical degrees.
