What Does Yoga Maya Mean?

Yoga maya is a term that means the “divine illusory power.” As a compound word, yogamaya is the personification of this power as an avatar of the Hindu goddess Devi. In Sanskrit, yoga means “union,” and maya translates as “illusion.” Specifically, maya is the illusion that the world is as it appears to be and all of its distractions.

The spiritual practice of yoga is the means to transform maya. The term yoga maya was adopted by some schools of Hinduism to acknowledge yoga’s power with regard to maya.

Yogapedia Explains Yoga Maya

In theistic Hinduism, the supreme God has material energy, known as mahamaya, and spiritual energy, known as yoga maya. Yoga maya is that illusory power that creates the visible universe and has control over the goal of yoga, which is unity with the Ultimate Reality, or the universe itself. But yoga maya is also the divine energy that allows God to be an object of devotion.

The personification of this energy, Yogamaya is mentioned in Hindu scriptures. In the Bhagavad Gita, yoga maya is the internal energy that remains forever even after all else is destroyed. It is the the divine power to create the appearance and illusion of the universe. In the Bhagavata Purana, Shiva transforms Markendeya’s heart using his yoga maya.
