Adi Anadi

Last updated: December 21, 2023

What Does Adi Anadi Mean?

Adi anadi is a Sanskrit term that means “everlasting,” “without beginning or end” and “beyond space and time.” The term comes from the Sanskrit, adi, meaning “beginning” or “commencement.” The prefix, an, means “without”; so, anadi adi literally translates as “without a beginning.”

Adi anadi is the Vedic equivalent of the Christian concept of the Alpha and Omega. In the context of yogic and Indian philosophy, adi anadi is typically represented by Om (also spelled Aum), the primordial cosmic sound vibration. Adi anadi is also said to encompass all that exists.

Yogapedia Explains Adi Anadi

Adi anadi refers to Brahman, or the Ultimate Reality, which is an esoteric concept that is sometimes defined as the omnipresent source of the universe. The goal of yoga is union with the Ultimate Reality and liberation from the life-death-rebirth cycle.

The sound of Aum symbolizes the energy of Brahman, which is adi anadi. “A” represents creative energy, or Brahma shakti; “U” stands for the energy of preservation, or Vishnu shakti; and “M” symbolizes liberating and destructive energy, or Shiva shakti. Because of its association with Brahman, meditation on this sound is believed to result in a state of samadhi, or union with the Divine.
