Definition - What does Yoganidrasana mean?

Yoganidrasana, an Ashtanga yoga pose, is a challenging forward bend in a supine position. Derived from Sanskrit, yoga means "to unite," nidra means "sleep" and asana means "pose." It is said that yogis in ancient times slept in this pose, hence the name.

To enter the pose, lie down face up with the legs stretched. Bend the legs and place the feet on the floor a few feet from the hips. Bring the left leg toward the head by holding the foot with both hands, lift the head off the floor and place the left ankle under the head on the floor. Bring the right leg toward the head and place the right foot under the left foot so that the ankles are one above the other and the feet interlock. Place the head on the feet. Bring the hands behind the back and lock the fingers. Remain in the pose for 30 seconds. Then release the hands to exit the pose.

Yoganidrasana may also be referred to as yogic sleep pose in English.
