What Does Chakra Psychology Mean?

Chakra psychology is the study of how the chakras, or metaphysical centers of energy in the body, influence the mind and human behavior. In yoga, the number of chakras varies by tradition, but it is generally accepted that there are seven major chakras located along the spinal column.

Each chakra is believed to affect the yogi’s mental, spiritual and physical well-being. A blocked chakra has a negative effect, while an activated chakra allows prana (life force energy) to circulate throughout the body.

Yogapedia Explains Chakra Psychology

Knowing the particular effect each chakra has on a person and the symptoms displayed can help in understanding and resolving mental and emotional issues. The seven main chakras and their effects on mental and emotional health include:

  • Muladhara (root chakra) – provides a sense of groundedness, security and inner strength. Someone who feels insecure might have a blockage of this chakra.
  • Svadisthana (spleen or sacral chakra) – influences creative and sexual energy, pleasure, excitement and enthusiasm.
  • Manipura (solar plexus) – provides confidence, optimism and self-esteem.
  • Anahata (heart chakra) – represents love, compassion, empathy and connection. Someone who feels unloved may need to activate anahata.
  • Visuddha (throat chakra) – influences communication, emotional stability and authentic expression.
  • Ajna (third eye chakra) – associated with intuition, imagination, wisdom and perception.
  • Sahasrara (crown chakra) – controls the brain and nervous system. If sahasrara is balanced, the yogi experiences a sense of peace and serenity.
