What Does Anusara Mean?

Anusara is a Sanskrit term derived from the root words, anu, meaning "with," and sara, meaning "flow." Therefore, anusara may be translated as "flowing with grace" or "natural state." It is also the name of a style of Hatha yoga that was created by John Friend in 1997.

Anusara yoga is also a form of Iyengar yoga that incorporates Hindu spirituality and has a Western style with a strong emphasis on health. The name is used to mean “flowing with grace” and “following your heart,” which is related to its original Sanskrit meaning.

Yogapedia Explains Anusara

Anusara yoga is viewed as an inclusive and accepting style of yoga. Rather than forcing everyone to use the standard yoga postures in the same way, yogis are given the opportunity to express themselves and find the positions that best suit them.

This style of yoga has a set of three basic principles: attitude, alignment and action. It also uses five alignment principles, which incorporate a number of different concepts to achieve the maximum benefit from every asana.
