What Does Meditation Pose Mean?

Meditation pose is a sitting yoga posture that opens the groin and hips and is usually practiced during meditation.

From dandasana (staff pose), one knee bends so the foot rests next to the perineum. The other knee bends so the other foot rests in front of the first one, with the heel touching the ankle. Both knees touch the floor with the hands resting on them, and the spine and neck are straight.

Meditation pose is otherwise known as free pose or liberation pose. It may also be referred to by its Sanskrit name, muktasana.

Meditation pose helps the practitioner concentrate, calms and focuses the mind, and is an ideal pose for meditation.

This pose is often confused with another sitting posture called siddhasana (accomplished pose). Many yoga sources may list meditation pose as an alternative to accomplished pose, or is given the same description. The main difference between these two poses is that the feet are free in meditation pose, but they rest on top of each other in accomplished pose.

If it is painful to sit in meditation pose, or not possible to place the knees on the floor, it is recommended to place a folded blanket or a pillow under the buttocks for support.
