Definition - What does Virabhadrasana 1 mean?

Virabhadrasana 1 is a standing asana that requires balance, strength and flexibility. It is named after Virabhadra, an incarnation of Shiva and a powerful warrior in Hindu mythology.

In this asana, the legs are in a lunge pose and the arms are raised overhead with the palms facing each other or touching. The front heel should be aligned with the back heel,and the back foot should be turned at a 45-60 degree angle. The front leg bends at a 90 degree angle and the hips are squared, facing forward.

Virabhadrasana 1 may also be referred to as warrior one pose in English.

Virabhadrasana 1 is part of the primary series of Ashtanga yoga and a foundational asana in other schools of yoga. In addition to a range of physical benefits, virabhadrasana 1 promotes mental focus and energizes the mind and body.

As the first of three poses in the Virabhadrasana series, Virabhadrasana 1 represents the warrior materializing out of the ground. Virabhadrasana 2 represents the warrior sighting his enemy and Virabhadrasana 3 represents the warrior going into battle.

Traditionally, Virabhadrasana 1 is believed to activate the the muladhara (root) and svadisthana (spleen or sacral) chakras. Energizing the muladhara chakra through this asana is believed to ground the individual, providing the inner stability necessary for personal growth. By activating the svadisthana chakra, this asana fosters inner acceptance and promotes focus and productivity.
