Definition - What does Floating Stick Pose mean?
Floating stick pose, or floating staff pose, is a balancing yoga posture that strengthens the arms, shoulders, wrists and core muscles. It is an advanced variation of stick pose.
The practitioner begins in stick pose with the legs extended, the spine straight and the hips at a 90-degree angle. The palms of the hands are placed alongside the thighs with the elbows bent. With the palms pushing into the floor, the arms are straightened and the body is lifted off the ground. A yoga block or other weight may be added on top of the lap for increased resistance.
The Sanskrit name for floating stick pose is utpluti dandasana; however, it may also be sometimes called celibate's pose (Brahmacharyasana), although a different seated pose is also associated with that name.

All stick pose variations are energizing, but the more advanced floating stick is believed to energize the mind and entire physical body, and is an important pose for conserving sexual energy for spiritual purposes.

Beginners may use yoga blocks to assist with floating stick pose. Put the blocks alongside the thighs, and place the palms on top of the blocks, spreading the fingers. Then, push up and straighten the arms to lift off of the ground.
