Worshipped for the life and abundance she gives, Bhumi is known as the Earth goddess or "goddess of the Earth." As the Mother Earth goddess, she creates, gives life and sustains it, and she is regarded as a kind Goddess whom we are indebted to with gratitude for the Earth.
The daughter of Kashyup Prajapati, Bhumi is the mother of Sita, the Demon Naraka and the deities Alamelu Mangamma and Sri Padmavathi Devi. Those who honor her benevolence often chant her mantra: Om Shrãm Bhu Devyai Namah, which means, "I bow to the divine Goddess Bhu." Respecting and honoring Bhumi can be done through mantra and also through action by living mindfully and respectfully of the impact we have on the Earth and the environment.
