Superconscious Mind

Last updated: December 21, 2023

What Does Superconscious Mind Mean?

The superconscious mind is that which is beyond both the conscious and subconscious minds, reaching into the highest level of awareness. It's the universal mind that is at one with Brahman, which is also the source of intuition.

The physical center of the superconscious mind is the brain's frontal lobe between the eyebrows. This spot is also known as the third-eye center, or ajna chakra.

One of the goals of yoga is union with Brahman. Yoga practice, therefore, gradually prepares the body and mind for the unlimited scope of the superconscious mind.

Yogapedia Explains Superconscious Mind

The superconscious mind tends to lie dormant. To awaken it, yogis use a variety of practices, including meditation, asana, pranayama and mantras. Meditation, or dhyana, is the most direct path to the superconscious mind.

Of the Eight Limbs of Yoga as described in the Yoga Sutras, three involve quieting the fluctuations of both the conscious and subconscious mind in order to reach a state of oneness that is the superconscious mind. They are:

  • Dharana – attention, or the practice of maintaining a single focal point
  • Dhyana – meditation or the contemplation of the spiritual and clearing the mind in preparation for samadhi
  • Samadhi – the merging of the mind or spirit with Brahman

This last limb, samadhi, is the realm of the superconscious mind. All spiritual and physical healing originates from this mind, as does peace, kindness, forgiveness and love. The superconscious mind is the infinite intelligence that controls the universe and it's the collective consciousness of all existence.
