What Does
Kevala Mean?
Kevala is a Sanskrit word that has multiple meanings, such as "whole," "complete," "pure," "absolute" or "supreme."
Kevala kumbhaka is a type of pranayama described in the Yoga Sutras that literally translates as the "pure suspension of breath." It is a form of breath control used during Raja yoga and follows the mastering of pranayama techniques that address the inhale and exhale. It can occur spontaneously during meditation when the body reaches a deep level of inner stillness where breathing is barely detectable.
Yogapedia Explains Kevala
Kevala is the Jain form of spiritual completeness, or spiritual liberation. A kevalin is someone who is liberated from the effects of karma. It is similar to the Buddhist state of nirvana and the Hindu concept of moksha.
To achieve kevala, one must follow the path of ahimsa, or non-violence, because Jains believe that it is the only path to spiritual liberation. The term is also used in Jainism to refer to kevala jnana, which is omniscience or supreme knowledge. A person who has attained kevala jnana is also called a kevalin.
