What Does Dhatu Mean?

Dhatu is a Sanskrit word that refers to the seven building blocks of the physical body. Dhatu are collectively referred to as saptadhatu, meaning “seven dhatu.”

According to Ayurveda, dhatu are associated with the tissues of the body. As such, dhatu support the structure of the body and its function, aiding in both physical and psychological health.

Regular practice of yoga and meditation help balance and maintain dhatu.

The saptadhatus and their function are categorized as:

  1. Rasa – Plasma – Nourishment
  2. Rakta – Blood – Circulation
  3. Mamsa – Muscle – Movement
  4. Medha – Fat – Lubrication
  5. Asthi – Bone – Support
  6. MajjaBone marrow – Generation of blood cells
  7. Shukra – Sexual hormones – Reproduction

The tridoshas – vata, pitta and kappa – all regulate the dhatu. The seven dhatu draw energy from each other. Each dhatu can influence the health of the others. In Ayurveda, the health of the body and mind is linked to the health conditions associated with these seven dhatu.
