Transcendental Meditation(TM)

Last updated: December 21, 2023

What Does Transcendental Meditation (TM) Mean?

Transcendental meditation is a type of meditation that uses mantras to transcend normal thought processes. This can help the practitioner relax and remove stress as well as aid in personal development.

Engaging in transcendental meditation can help yoga practitioners avoid distracting thoughts and relax without losing awareness. Because it requires complete rest and stillness, this type of meditation cannot be combined with an active style of yoga. However, it can be used as a complementary practice.

Yogapedia Explains Transcendental Meditation (TM)

Now considered one of the most popular methods of meditating in the world, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi first introduced this technique in the 1950s, popularizing it over the next few decades through world tours and celebrity endorsement. He based it on the Vedic traditions and wisdom.

This type of meditation has been taught to millions of people around the world. It is supported by the global Transcendental Meditation movement, which is said to have more than 5 million followers. One of the most controversial aspects of this movement is how it should be classified. It has been called a religion, a social movement, a cult, a spiritual movement, and more.

Transcendental meditation is carried out by repeating a mantra that draws the mind’s focus away from external stimulus and internal conflicts. This practice should be repeated twice a day, with eyes closed, for 15 to 20 minutes at a time.
