Shukra Dhatu

Last updated: December 21, 2023

What Does Shukra Dhatu Mean?

According to Ayurveda, the Sarira (body), Manas (mind), and Prana (life force) are all supported by tissues known as dhatu. Shukra Dhatu refers to both male and female reproductive tissue, although menstrual blood and ovum are considered separately as Artava Dhatu.

In order to produce Shukra Dhatu, it is important to balance the water element in the body, particularly through diet. Milk, juice, ghee and nuts are all highly nourishing foods that contain the essence of water, but proper digestion is required in order to maintain the balance of elements within the body.

Yogapedia Explains Shukra Dhatu

Shukra means bright, pure, radiant or essence. In Ayurveda, this term is used for reproductive tissue, since it contains the pure essence of all other tissues in the body. A person with healthy Shukra Dhatu tends to have bright eyes, radiant skin and high levels of confidence. Physical strength, high libido and good fertility are also indicators of balanced levels of Shukra Dhatu.

The best method to assess Shukra Dhatu in males is to inspect the ejaculate, particularly its colour, volume, sperm count and motility. Grey colour indicates a low quantity of Shukra Dhatu, whereas pale white indicates a healthy or high quantity. In females, a healthy and regular menstrual cycle indicates balanced Shukra Dhatu.

Low sperm count, ovarian cysts, irregular menstrual cycles and fertility problems are all symptoms of low or imbalanced Shukra Dhatu. In this case, treatment tends to focus on proper nourishment and management of sexual energy. Engaging in healthy relationships and steady routines are recommended in order to balance Shukra Dhatu.
