Definition - What does Yahweh Yoga mean?
Yahweh Yoga is a yoga teacher training program based in Chandler, Arizona, that focuses on Christian-style yoga. Founded by the mother-daughter team of DeAnna Smothers and Courtney Chalfant, Yahweh Yoga is also a yoga studio, as well as a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School.
The goal is to spread Christian values and ideals through yoga, and to create an atmosphere that allows yogis to develop an intimate relationship with God. Yahweh Yoga also focuses on healthy living and eating, believing that God cares about the whole person.
Yogapedia explains Yahweh Yoga
Yahweh Yoga is designed to promote mental, physical and spiritual health with a Christian focus. Unlike some Christian yoga-like practices that avoid using the term “yoga” to describe their programs, Yahweh Yoga does not see a conflict between yoga and Christianity. The founders believe that yoga is not a religion or theology, but a methodology. As such, it can be practiced by yogis of any religion or those who are not religious.
Yahweh Yoga can accommodate Christians from all denominations. Classes begin with a scripture reading and end with prayer. The type of yoga practiced can vary and may include:
- Fitness yoga
- Yoga Pilates
- Gentle yoga
- Vinyasa flow
- Hot yoga
- Restorative yoga
