Last updated: December 21, 2023

What Does Om Mantra Meditation Mean?

Om mantra meditation is a simple chanting of the syllable “om (or “aum) during meditation. Om is believed to be the primal sound vibration of the universe. A mantra can be a sound or single syllable like om, or it can be a word, phrase or longer recitation, and it is used in yoga to focus the mind in preparation for meditation and/or to deepen meditation.

Considered perhaps the most powerful of all the bija (seed) mantras, the om mantra used in meditation helps connect the yogi with the divine within.

Yogapedia Explains Om Mantra Meditation

In Hinduism, om is associated with Brahman, the Absolute, and in yoga, om is the sound that is believed to activate and clear the sahasrara (crown) chakra. Om mantra meditation helps the yogi achieve a higher level of consciousness.

To practice om mantra meditation, take a comfortable seated position, close the eyes and inhale deeply. Exhale slowly while drawing out the sound of om. Pause and repeat the inhalation and recitation of om, while allowing the mind to relax and focus on the vibrations of the sound. Continue to meditate and repeat the om mantra. Some practice this meditation for 20 to 30 minutes.
