What Does
Yoga Art Therapy Mean?
Yoga art therapy is the name given to the practice that combines yoga with art therapy. It is said to combine the benefits of both activities, welcoming in courage and creativity while remaining grounded and letting go of any judgement. It is said to be especially effective because it nurtures the body, mind and spirit together.
Yoga art therapy may be taught in a workshop format, on a one-to-one, or as part of an individual’s self practice.
Yogapedia Explains Yoga Art Therapy
As an experiential rather than an intellectual approach, some say yoga art therapy can overcome the resistance that may arise when a person tries traditional therapy techniques.
In one form of this therapeutic practice, the yoga mat becomes a canvas for the creation of artwork, and practitioners then begin the practice of asanas, holding art materials, such as charcoal, in their hands or beneath their palms in order to draw and create as they move.
In another form, art is practiced after or during a yoga class, with an opportunity given to go straight into the creative process after taking savasana. The intention is generally to stay present with the breath during the drawing or painting as well as the yoga practice and to cultivate the same attitude of non-judgement and openness to whatever comes up.
