What Does Human Mandala Pose Mean?

Human mandala pose is one of a series of group yoga postures, in which everyone typically sits or lies down in a circle with feet and/or hands touching. When viewed from above, the posture resembles a mandala.

A mandala is a circular design – often elaborate – that represents the universe and universal energy. It is used in yoga, Hinduism and Buddhism as a visual tool to focus on during meditation. Mandala is a Sanskrit term that means “essence” or “circle.”

Mandalas are circular designs composed of intricate geometric designs emanating from a center point, which represents the source energy.

In one simple version of the human mandala pose, the yogis sit in a circle with the feet touching in the center, arms crossed and hands joined with the yogis on the right and left. Human mandala poses are limited only by the creativity of the yogis. In another variation, the yogi lies face up with heads toward the center of the circle and shoulders touching; the legs are the spread with every other yogi's legs resting atop of his neighbours'.
