Slow Hands Moving Meditation

Last updated: December 21, 2023

What Does Slow Hands Moving Meditation Mean?

Slow hands moving meditation is one type of a range of meditative practices that involves movement. An extension of traditional meditation, it begins in a comfortable seated pose with the hands resting on the thighs. You then focus on the breath and tiny movements of the hands.

This type of moving meditation clears and calms an overstimulated mind, thereby improving focus. It also allows you to concentrate on the present moment, rather than focusing on the past or the things you need or want to do in the future.

Yogapedia Explains Slow Hands Moving Meditation

Moving meditation is a way of shifting consciousness to create awareness while making simple movements. Other forms of moving meditation involve the whole body: tai-chi, walking a labyrinth, qigong and aidkido.

Mahasati meditation uses aspects of the slow hands moving meditation. From a sitting position, all focus is on one hand and its simple movements. For example, you can slowly turn one hand on its side and pause, focusing on that hand. Other slow movements include raising the hand, resting the hand on the abdomen, resting the hand on the chest, and raising both hands with the palms facing. Mahasati meditation also incorporates other meditative movements like walking to provide a break from the seated posture of slow hands moving meditation.
