Kundalini Awakening

Last updated: December 21, 2023

What Does Kundalini Awakening Mean?

Kundalini awakening describes the process of activating the dormant primal life force energy that rests at the base of the spine. Kundalini is a Sanskrit word that is often translated as “coiled one,” referring to the analogy of the energy as a coiled serpent waiting to be awakened. The root of the word, kunda, means “pot,” “pitcher” or “basin,” representing a receptacle holding the energy.

When awakened, kundalini rises up through the chakras, following the spinal column from the root chakra through to the crown chakra, opening and activating each.

Yogapedia Explains Kundalini Awakening

Yoga practices such as pranayama breathing exercises, meditation, mantra chanting and even asana practice can awaken kundalini. It can also be awakened through the initiation of shaktipat, which is the transfer of spiritual energy from guru to student.

In order to safely experience kundalini awakening, the yogi must open the channels of the subtle body through which kundalini will travel. If the person in whom kundalini awakens is not prepared, the power of this energy can cause inner chaos and confusion. In addition to careful yogic practice, kundalini awakening is believed to occur as the result of trauma, drug use, prolonged stress or near-death experience, among others.

When prepared for the kundalini awakening, the yogi experiences a change in consciousness that leads to health, wellness and a feeling of bliss and oneness with the universe – a state known as samadhi, the eighth and final limb in the eight-fold path of yoga.
