Kundalini Energy

Last updated: December 21, 2023

What Does Kundalini Energy Mean?

Kundalini energy is the divine feminine energy that is also known as shakti or goddess energy and sometimes as serpent energy. In Hindu and yoga philosophy, it is the creative power and energy of the universe. In many yoga traditions, kundalini energy is believed to lie dormant at the base of the spine, and one of the purposes of yoga practice is to awaken this energy.

Kundalini is a word derived from the Sanskrit, kundalin, which means, among other things, “snake.” Kundalini energy is often described as a coiled snake at the base of the spine that the yogi must awaken.

Yogapedia Explains Kundalini Energy

In Kundalini yoga in particular (but other yoga traditions, as well), the yogi attempts to awaken kundalini energy through various practices such as asanas, pranayama breathing exercises, chanting and meditation. It is believed that, once awakened, kundalini energy travels up the region of the spinal column through the subtle channels known as nadis, activating each of the seven main chakras along the way. Ultimately, awakened kundalini energy helps the yogi achieve enlightenment.

Kundalini energy is also believed to have these benefits:

  • Helps the yogi be present
  • Clears and calms the mind
  • Improves memory
  • Relieves physical ailments such as those associated with the stomach, liver, kidney and throat
