Turmeric is a herb used both as a spice in Indian cuisine and as a dietary supplement and healing agent used since the ancient times in the medical system of Ayurveda. It is valued for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant properties, among others.

From the root of the Curcuma longa plant, turmeric is most commonly referred to in India by the Hindi name, haldi (yellow), because of its yellowish-orange color. It is also known by several Sanskrit terms: haridra, gauri, kanchani and aushadhi.

Turmeric has a taste that is bitter, pungent and astringent. In Ayurveda, it is believed to balance the vata and kapha doshas -- two of the bio-elements or energies that comprise the body -- because of its heating ability. It is also thought to balance the pitta dosha because of its bitterness.
